Yesterday Karen, Jack and I went to a hanami (cherry blossom viewing) party in Aoyama
cemetery. Strange to have a party in
a graveyard,
especially a party that emphasizes
drunken
revelry.
We went with Makis and Mhairi and their friend
Miriam who is visiting from Spain. We found
a spot to sit (it's like a picnic) and soon
after a whole group of Mhairi's friends showed
up to join us. Not to be outdone, Karen got
our friends Trudy, Mark and baby Jo to come
as well.
Hanami season is one of my favorite
times
of year in Japan, not because I like
the
blossoms, but because it's one of the
few
things that we do here that takes place
outside.

Yesterday was Jack's 8 month birthday. I'm
going to make a new 'Baby Jack' gallery (in
Hunkabutta's Gallery section) soon. We've
amassed quite a few pictures of the little
man.

When most people think of Japan, modern-day
Japan, they think of technology. Cool
technology.
Small technology.
That cliched picture is valid, more or less.
Although I don't really think that Japanese
technology is really all that more advanced
than what you'd find in the West, Japan is
nonetheless a 'Gadget Guy's' wet dream.
Compact little gizmos are ubiquitous. From
the latest cellular phone with live streaming
video that you see sticking out of the cool
kid's pocket, to the robot pet dog that your
lonely and embittered landlady bought to
keep herself company, people's lives are
infused with, are constantly influenced by,
consumer electronics.
In Japan, every guy is a gadget guy.
The thing that always brings this home for
me is when I see people using 'wearable'
technology, such as CD walkman controls that
are worn on the lapel, or in the case of
today's pictures, headphones.

The annual Tokyo St. Patrick's day
parade
was bigger than ever. The weather was
warm
and sunny and crowd was in good spirits.
There was the usual mixture of traditional
Japanese motifs (i.e., Shinto spirits and
temple paraphernalia) and cliched Irish symbols,
along with a good dose of product promotion.
We didn't get to march in the parade this
year, but it was quite a fun spectacle nonetheless.

I haven't forgotten about that 'Best of Hunkabutta
First Year' gallery that I proposed a while
back. Expect it sometime near the end of
the week

Just spending the weekend chillin'
out. Relax'n,
as they say.
Tomorrow is the annual Tokyo St. Patrick's
day parade. We'll be going, so expect some
pictures of said event soon.
