Today I killed three pigeons that have been
plaguing our apartment for over a year. It
was a terrible and gruesome scene: I tried
not to look into their eyes as I did it.
I feel like crap and don't even want to talk
about it right now...I'll tell you more on Monday.
Other than the avian carnage, things are going
well. Tomorrow we're going out somewhere
(haven't decided yet) with Makis, Mhairi,
their baby Ioulia and Mhairi's mother who
is visiting from Scotland. Hopefully we'll
go to some place where I can get some good,
punchy photos for you.

The other day Karen got me a book on
black
and white photography from the library,
so
I thought I'd give it a try for a while.
What do you think?

Slower.net is a great photo blog that I have seen recommended
in a few places lately. You should check
it out.
Also, thanks to Laura for bringing to my attention More Than Donuts. A blog by a painfully funny girl from,
where else, New York.

In about five minutes Japan will play Turkey
in the World Cup Round of 16. As usual, my
company has set up a TV projector in our
largest meeting room so that we can all watch
the game. It should be fun, and I'm heading
there as soon as I upload this web page.
Last Sunday when Japan beat Tunisia life
devolved into absolute pandemonium for several
hours. I've never seen people here interact
with strangers on the street before. They
were giving each other high-fives and chanting
'NIPPON NIPPON' as they walked passed each
other. It made me feel all warm and fuzzy
inside.
I took today's pictures in front of Shibuya
station right after the Japan-Tunisia match.

So far there have been no incidents
of hooliganism
involving foreign fans. However, as
the Japanese
team keeps winning, and as the fans
become
more and more excited, Japanese locals
are
starting to get all wild and rowdy.
You can't really call the Japanese fans 'hooligans'
because they're not beating the crap out
of anyone under the false pretense of being
sports fans. For the most part, the Japanese
fans are doing things like jumping into rivers
and running across busy streets while cheering
-- essentially the issue is that they're
endangering themselves.
So, to fill the semantic void I want
to go
on record as coining the new term 'Jooligan',
meaning Japanese hooligan.

You can also see more pictures from Friday's
celebration in front of Shibuya station in
the new hunkabutta World Cup gallery.

Happy Father's Day, Dad. I wish you could
be here to see your grandson Jack.
My first Father's Day has been really nice.
Karen has been cooking all of my favourite
food for me, and Jack (even though he's only
ten months old) somehow managed to go out
and buy me a cool Reverend Gary Davis CD and t-shirt.
It's great being a dad.
