Tomorrow Karen and I are going up to the
Sunshine Coast to look at some homes. We're
really interested in this one particular
place in Roberts Creek. It's got a large
main house, a guest cottage, workshop, ocean
view, an orchard and five acres of land.
("Greeeeeen acres is the place to be!"
-- American TV show reference).
All of a sudden I feel all grown up
talking
about mortgages and interest rates.
Now if
I can only stop living like a university
student I'll be set.
I'll take lots of pictures of the house
touring
tomorrow so that you can all take a
look
next time.
Wish us luck.

We're back in Vancouver, well actually Crescent
Beach in Surrey to be exact. The trees are
big, the roads wide, and the people scruffy
but personable.
I haven't really announced this on Hunkabutta
yet, but it looks like we'll
be moving back to Canada this fall, probably
at the end of September. We've been talking
about this for a while but we've finally
made up our minds. I know,
I know, it'll be the end of an era for those
of you who mainly visit
Hunkabutta because you are interested in
Japan, but I hope that I'll be
able to make Vancouver and the province of
British Columbia seem like an
interesting place in photographs as well.
Though I'm sure that it won't
have quite the exotic charm of Tokyo
for
most of you.
We've been here in B.C. for a few days but
have spent most of our time getting our editing
business in order and running errands.
We'll be back in Tokyo for August and
September
so you'll be able to have at least
one more
Tokyo-photo blogging binge before we
leave
for good.
We're both sad at the thought of leaving.
It's kind of a scary feeling really.
Japan
is the only home we've known as a family.
We were married there, had our son
Jack there,
but it's time to go home.
As the old cliche goes, change is the only
constant.

Tomorrow we're all going to Vancouver. Returning
home in the summer is starting to turn into
a bit of a tradition.
This time we're planning on looking at homes
and properties on the Sunshine Coast because that's where we'll probably live
when we return to Canada permanently. Karen's
sister Julie will also be visiting from New Brunswick
with her baby Solange. It's going to be our
first time meeting Solange, so that should
be a cheek-pinching, squeal-emitting good
time.
I love taking pictures in British Columbia,
there's just something about the light
that
makes everything in the photograph
glow.
I'll be taking a lot of pictures while
I'm
in Canada, but I'm not sure how often
I'll
be able to post to Hunkabutta. I'll
try my
best to keep the pictures coming.

Here's your Japanese fun fact of the day.
Karen recently figured out why a lot of her
Japanese dishes taste just a bit wonky. It's
because when the recipe calls for 'a cup'
of one ingredient or another, this actually
means a 'Japanese rice cup', which has been
standardized at 200ml. We've always been
cooking with a western measuring cup, which
I believe holds 250ml.
This all makes me wonder if our Japanese
counterparts living in Canada are going around
using Japanese measuring cups with Canadian
recipes, and then ending up eating really
thick and dry dishes and saying to themselves,
"Man, this pasty Canadian food really
sucks, eh?!"
